Space is the Place

This project breif challenged us to take a local space and rework it into something new. We were to use a strategy based approach to help create and develop a cohesive and localized brand for our chosen space. For my Space I chose Finsbury Park. This space is a beautiful outdoor park space composed of a couple dozen different sports spaces as well as a large playground and scattered green spaces. The park has a lush tree canopy and an abundance of grassy fields; cutting through the landscape is the New River, and separated on the other side is a series of baseball fields spaced out around the north portion of the park.

Strategy

I propose that this space could be a fantastic site for a youth Softball league. I believe Softball is an incredible sport for young girls to learn and grow proficiency in as it covers a lot of developmental bases in addition to being fun to play. With softball you are learning precise hand-eye-coordination, agility, cardio, team building and communication with peers, as well as a balance of upper and lower body strength, and quick decision making skills. Because of all these reasons, I believe that it is an excellent tool of empowerment for women and girls and it would be a benefit to try and build up more popularity for the sport in this region.

A unique feature of this field is the river that runs along the edge, dividing it from the rest of the park. There are other aspects of the park as a whole that are unique, like the Duck Pond, and, in addition to the baseball fields at finsbury park, there is pretty much every other kind of outdoor recreational sport field you could imagine, from a running track to tennis courts and a rugby pitch, the park itself is exceptionally well-rounded. This place is also unique in that there are not many baseball or softball fields around London in general, I would presume this is true for most of the UK as the sport as a whole is, understandably, more popular in the US.When thinking about the audience I feel like it is definitely a twofold situation, because one audience is the kids and getting them to look at the signage and think “oooh well that looks fun!” and the other audience is obviously the parents who are the ones signing the kid up and taking their kids to and from the games and practices, as well as paying for the equipment.
