Open Studios Promotion

Open studios is an annual event put on by the School of Art and Design at SDSU that offers a chance for people to explore the different majors and engage with students and faculty members by visiting the various studios, classrooms and galleries on campus; this event is meant to engage visitors with the many departments within the School of Art and Design. It is also leading the path from SDSU to professional careers by highlighting the grad students in these programs. The goal of this project was to help promote the event by creating a well researched and developed concept that could be applied to a poster, social media post, postcard, and wayfinding sign and potentially other promotional materials. As part of this brief we also choose whether to use a unique message or tagline as a main focus to pair with the event name. We were meant to use our design to effectively showcase the school and graduate students and their unique departments in a captivating way encouraging visitors to attend the event.

Strategy

I focused my concept on the audience of prospective students, and the promotees, the Graduate Students, and wanted to find a  concept to appeal to both simultaneously; which is why I chose “Make Your Mark.” It is a call out to prospective students that they can come to SDSU to make their own mark on the world; and an underline for the Graduate Students who are starting to make their own marks through Open Studios. Making your mark is something personal, and something that's not always perfect, which is why I combined the pasted paper texture with the fingerprint symbols; and that in conjunction with the vivid color palette not only grab your attention—but showcase the somewhat chaotic path that creating art can make.
